The whole internet is just files

@advay·24 October 2026·2 min read
Someone asked me how I put this site online. They thought it was a big deal. Servers. Hosting. Something you pay for every month. It is not. The whole internet is just files. When you open advay.pages.dev, a computer somewhere sends your browser a few files. One page file. Maybe a style file. Maybe a script. A couple of images. Your browser reads them and draws what you see. That is all that is happening. Once that clicks, the rest is small. 1. Make one file Open Notepad. Or TextEdit. Anything. Type this: <h1>Hi, I am Advay</h1> <p>This is my page.</p> Save it as index.html. Double click it. It opens in your browser. That is a website. It is just not on the internet yet. It is sitting on your laptop. 2. Put it on the internet, free You need somewhere to keep the files so anyone can fetch them. Three places do this for free, no card needed: - Cloudflare Pages (the one I use) - GitHub Pages - Netlify They all work the same way. You drag your folder in, or connect a GitHub repo, and they hand you a link like yourname.pages.dev. The first time takes about ten minutes. 3. That link is enough It looks like a random subdomain. That is fine. Nobody cares. Send it to a friend. If you want your own name on it, like yourname.com, that costs money. Roughly a thousand rupees a year. Get it later. Or never. Plenty of good sites live on free links. 4. Then change one thing Here is the part nobody tells you. The first version is supposed to be bad. Mine was a white page with my name in the middle. I have changed it about forty times since. Every time I opened it, I changed one thing. That is the whole method. You do not plan a site. You keep poking it. Why I am writing this For two years I thought making a website was something other people did. People with better laptops. People who already knew things. It is files. You can make files. If you are waiting for someone to tell you it is your turn, this is me telling you. Make the file.
